The Guardrail: RHSR Safety Rails

The opening itself is the first hazard. When a roof hatch is in use, there’s a hole in the roof and someone is moving through it. OSHA rules are clear in stating that the opening needs to be guarded. The requirement isn’t a guardrail somewhere nearby, but rather a system that encloses the opening, meets defined height and load standards, and stays in place whether or not anyone is actively using the hatch.

Acudor’s RHSR Safety Rails are built around those requirements. The system encloses the hatch perimeter, installs without penetrating the roof membrane, and stands at the height OSHA specifies — roughly 42 inches — with the structural integrity to meet load requirements. The yellow powder-coat finish isn’t incidental either; high visibility is part of what makes a guardrail function as a warning system as well as a physical barrier.

The gate is where most existing installations fall short. OSHA requires that the opening in the guardrail — the gap that lets a worker step through to reach the ladder — be protected by a self-closing gate, one that swings shut without anyone having to remember to close it. Chains and drop bars don’t meet this standard. The gate on the RHSR system is built-in and closes automatically, removing that dependency entirely.

The Ladder: Fixed Shaft Modular Ladder System

Getting through the opening safely means the ladder needs to be part of the compliance picture too. OSHA’s requirements for fixed ladders address both the climb and the most exposed moments of it, and Acudor’s Fixed Shaft Modular Ladder System is designed with those expectations in mind.

The system is modular, building to the exact shaft height of a given installation rather than requiring field modifications. It can be specified with the safety features OSHA expects in demanding environments: a safety cage that protects the climber along the length of the ladder, a hinged self-closing gate that mirrors the guardrail gate requirement, interior or exterior landing steps for a secure footing when stepping on or off, and more. The ladder is as much a part of the safety system as anything around the hatch and should be specified that way.

The Climb-Out: SLE-Y and TSP-1

The transition from the top of the ladder to the roof surface is the most hazardous point in the access sequence. A worker reaching the top rung must shift weight from a vertical climb to a horizontal surface, often with nothing solid to hold through that last step. OSHA’s ladder standards address egress points for exactly this reason.

The SLE-Y is a fixed extension that rises above the hatch opening, giving a worker a firm grip through the step onto the roof. The TSP-1 is a telescoping version that adjusts to the hatch and shaft configuration. Both are designed to work directly with the roof hatch, bridging the gap between the top rung and the roof surface at the point where the exposure is greatest.
